Sam Jonkers

Lead volunteer for Care4Calais Thames Valley, Sam Jonkers’ work has “changed countless lives and her impact will be felt for many years to come.”

Put forward for The Chris Tarrant Award, sponsored by The Oracle, Sam’s tireless commitment to supporting refugees in Reading is nothing short of remarkable, said her nominator.

“She devotes countless hours to ensuring that those arriving in our town are met with compassion, dignity, and practical help. Whether organising clothing, food, toiletries, or offering emotional support, her dedication consistently goes above and beyond.”

A powerful example of her impact said the nominator was when a young man from war torn Sudan, cold and homeless, arrived at a Care4Calais Reading drop-in event.

“Sam greeted him with warmth and care, arranging an emergency bed, a train ticket to his Home Office appointment, and a backpack filled with food and essentials. Her response turned a moment of despair into one of hope and humanity.”

Sam is not only committed to providing vital supplies – she also works to help individuals access legal advice, healthcare, education, and a supportive network. Her person-centred approach ensures each individual is treated with respect, regardless of their story, said the nominator.

“Her energy is boundless. She gives up evenings, weekends, and holidays to support others, often at personal expense. Sam is one of the first to act in times of crisis, always putting others before herself.

“Her empathy, resilience, and unwavering support are a shining example of community spirit. Sam’s work has changed countless lives and her impact will be felt for many years to come.”
