Progress Theatre
Founded in 1946, Progress Theatre is a volunteer-led, self-funded theatre that has been at the heart of Reading’s cultural scene for almost 80 years.
Their nominator for the Cultural Contribution award, sponsored by M&G Real Estate, said the theatre is committed to promoting the arts, providing high-quality productions and offering opportunities for individuals of all ages to engage with and participate in the arts.
“It is renowned for its inclusive approach, offering workshops, youth theatre programmes and initiatives that support emerging artists and new writing.”
They said the theatre’s volunteers are the backbone of its success. “From actors and directors to backstage crew and front-of-house staff, every aspect of the theatre’s operation is driven by the dedication and passion of its volunteer community.
“This collective effort has enabled Progress Theatre to produce a diverse range of performances and community events, enriching the cultural life of Reading.”
They said Progress Theatre’s impact on the Reading community is profound. It serves as a hub for artistic expression, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to experience the transformative power of theatre.
“The theatre’s youth programme has provided countless young people with a platform to develop their skills, gain confidence and find their voice.”
