Berkshire Coroners Courts Support Service

The volunteers of Berkshire Coroners Courts Support Service show “unwavering dedication to supporting individuals and families during some of the most distressing and vulnerable times in their lives,” said their nominator for Volunteer/s of the Year.

Joy Abel leads the volunteer team at Reading Town Hall, ensuring that every person who walks through the doors of the Coroner’s Court is met with empathy, understanding, and reassurance, they added.

“The team of volunteers offer compassionate personal support to grieving families and the service works closely with the Coroner’s Office to understand and address family concerns and sensitivities, ensuring everyone feels heard, respected, and supported.

“Whether offering a quiet presence beside someone attending court alone, explaining court procedures, or helping family members cope with difficult emotions, the team consistently goes above and beyond.

“Their empathy and calm presence they bring is invaluable, with their efforts easing the emotional burden for countless individuals during their most vulnerable moments.

“Joy’s leadership, along with the volunteers' compassion and tireless service have made a profound difference to the lives of many in our community. They exemplify the very spirit of volunteerism and are truly deserving of this recognition.”
