Whitley Amateur Boxing Club

Founded in 2015 by head coach Nathan Ward, Whitley Amateur Boxing Club has grown into a vital hub of support, inspiration, and resilience for young people in one of Reading’s most underfunded areas.

Their nominator for Community of the Year, sponsored by Hilton Reading said they had visited the gym many times in the past three years and witnessed first-hand “the extraordinary impact the club has had on the local community.

“More than just a boxing club, it is a place where young people come not only to train but to belong.

“Through structured sessions and one-to-one mentoring, the club teaches more than boxing – it instils confidence, discipline, respect, and life skills that are transferable beyond the ring,” they said.

“Led by Nathan and a dedicated team of volunteers, including Dan Muston and Earl Stewart, the club offers a safe and empowering space where everyone is welcome and supported.”

The club’s influence extends far beyond its four walls,” they added.

“It has played a crucial role in reducing antisocial behaviour, improving physical and mental wellbeing, and bringing together families and communities through shared values and purpose. “Local organisations, schools, and families have all benefited from the club’s outreach and guidance.

“Whitley Amateur Boxing Club represents the very best of community spirit – driven by passion, built on respect, and committed to lifting others. They are true community champions and a shining example of what can be achieved through grassroots action.”
