Reading Mencap
For more than 60 years, Reading Mencap has been a vital source of support, advocacy, and empowerment for individuals with learning disabilities, helping them live independent, fulfilling lives.
The charity provides a wide range of services, from one-to-one advice and family support, to social and leisure opportunities that help reduce isolation, build confidence, and create lifelong friendships.
Their nominator for Charity of the Year sponsored by Reading Today said: “At the heart of Reading Mencap’s work is a deep understanding of the daily challenges faced by those they support.”
The team goes above and beyond to ensure that individuals and their families feel heard, valued, and included – whether it’s through their children’s clubs, adult day services, information and advice line, or helping to navigate complex care systems.
“Reading Mencap’s impact on the community is both far-reaching and personal. Families describe the organisation as a “lifeline” that provides not only practical assistance, but emotional reassurance and a sense of belonging.
“Their tireless advocacy has also contributed to wider awareness and inclusion for people with learning disabilities in Reading.
“Reading Mencap exemplifies the power of local charity work in transforming lives, championing equality, and creating a more inclusive community for all.”
