The Berkshire Animal Connection Centre
A sanctuary giving rescued animals a second chance while transforming the lives of local people has been nominated for the Charity of the Year Award, sponsored by Cream Design.
The Berkshire Animal Connection Centre, based in Swallowfield, has been recognised for providing a safe home for more than 50 rescued animals and delivering therapeutic programmes that benefit children and volunteers alike.
Founded by Fiona Graham in 2020, the charity cares for animals that have been abandoned, abused or deemed unwanted, giving them the opportunity to thrive in a permanent home.
“It provides a sanctuary for animals and a safe space for people to benefit from therapeutic interaction with them.”
Working in partnership with Reading Football Club Community Trust, the sanctuary also welcomes children from local schools, using animal-assisted activities to support young people who benefit from alternative education settings.
Despite being only six years old, the charity has continued to grow, with an expanding team of volunteers helping to raise awareness and support its work.
One young volunteer described the sanctuary as “a very fun and rewarding place to volunteer,” adding: “I especially like looking after the horses, making a difference to their lives and learning how to care for all the different rescue animals. The horses create a very calming atmosphere.”
“Although small, the charity makes a huge impact on both the children who visit and the volunteers,” the nominator added.
