Thames Water and New Directions College Roots to Reading Programme
A business partnership “demonstrating the life-changing impact of education and employer collaboration” has been nominated for the Business in Action award, sponsored by Boyes Turner.
Thames Water and New Directions College’s “Roots in Reading “ has been supporting refugees into employment since 2023 with building confidence, developing employability skills and providing practical support with CVs, interviews and understanding workplace culture.
“What makes this programme special is the commitment of Thames Water colleagues, who volunteer their time to mentor learners, share their experience and encourage them to believe in their potential,” said the nominator.
The nominator highlighted the story of Iryna, who joined the programme after arriving in the UK from Ukraine as a single parent. Through coaching, mock interviews and support from tutors, she gained the confidence to secure a job with Thames Water.
“She says the programme gave her ‘confidence, routine and structure’ during one of the hardest periods of her life, while helping her build lasting friendships and a sense of belonging,” the nominator added.
The partnership has delivered impressive results, with 60.7% of participants progressing into employment or further opportunities, 70.8% of learners with known outcomes achieving positive progression, and 10.7% securing jobs directly with Thames Water.
“Roots to Reading is about far more than finding work,” the nominator said. “It restores confidence, creates opportunity and helps people rebuild their lives.”
