Scott O’Brien, Associate Director Of Operations at the University of Reading has been nominated for Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by AB Walker.

Scott established a work-placement partnership between the university and Graft Thames Valley, supporting local people who may otherwise struggle to access employment opportunities to gain “valuable workplace experience, develop confidence and skills, and take meaningful steps towards independence.”

What began as a small programme has grown significantly over the past year. 13 people have now completed placements within the areas Scott manages in his day-to-day role, and opportunities have since been expanded across the wider university, including the Library, Film Theatre and Television studios, the Museum of English Rural Life, and the Crops and Environment facility.

“The impact has been life-changing,” the nominator said. “The majority of participants who have completed placements have gone on to secure paid employment, including roles within the University and with local employers.”

“One particularly inspiring success story saw a participant progress from a placement in Film Theatre and Television to confidently delivering the opening announcements at the University’s graduation ceremonies,” the nominator added.

In addition to this work, the Scott also volunteers as a Foundation Governor and Vice-Chair of Governors at a local secondary school, supporting opportunities for future generations.

“By bringing together a major local employer and a community charity, Scott has helped break down barriers to employment and create lasting benefits for individuals, families and the wider Reading community.”
