Saffiatu Bangura

A woman who is the “heart and soul” of her community has been nominated for the Local Hero Award, sponsored by Green Park.

Saffiatu Bangura has been recognised for her “exceptional commitment” to supporting Reading residents, providing practical and emotional help to individuals and families facing illness, bereavement, financial hardship and isolation.

“For many years, Saffiatu has been a steadfast source of support within our community,” said the nominator.

A registered nurse, Saffiatu's care extends far beyond her professional responsibilities. “She is often the first to visit those who are unwell, support grieving families and coordinate funeral arrangements, fundraising, food collections and emotional support for those in need,” the nominator added.

For well over 25 years, she has led fundraising efforts that have raised thousands of pounds for families facing difficult circumstances. She also prepares meals for those who are ill, helps organise celebrations during happier times and arranges affordable summer trips so local families can enjoy experiences they might otherwise miss.

“Saffiatu brings people together, connects families and is the first point of contact for many in our community,” the nominator said. “She gives her time and resources freely, never seeking recognition, and her honest dedication makes her a true local hero.”
