Mary Genis
A pioneering cultural leader whose work has celebrated Caribbean music and heritage for decades has been nominated for the Music Legacy Award, sponsored by Vale & West.
Mary Genis, founder of CultureMix Arts and Reading All Steel Percussion Orchestra (RASPO) has been recognised for her “exceptional contribution” to music, culture and community life in Reading and across the UK.
“Mary is a remarkable cultural leader whose impact extends far beyond Reading,” said the nominator. “She has dedicated decades to creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in music while celebrating Caribbean heritage.”
Under Mary's leadership, RASPO has grown into one of Reading’s greatest cultural success stories, performing annually at the Notting Hill Carnival and earning national recognition for its contribution to music, culture and community engagement.
“What began as a local initiative has become a source of pride for Reading,” the nominator said. “CultureMix Arts is truly a feather in Reading’s cap.”
Mary’s influence extends into schools and communities across Reading, where workshops and performances have inspired generations of young people to explore their heritage, build confidence and discover a love of music.
“Almost every month, I meet someone whose life has been touched by CultureMix Arts,” the nominator added. “Whether as a musician, volunteer, performer or audience member, the stories of confidence gained and lives enriched are countless.”
“Mary's legacy is visible in the thousands of people she has inspired, the musicians she has nurtured, the communities she has connected, and the cultural traditions she has helped preserve and celebrate.”
