A grassroots coach using the power of football to “uplift, unite, and support [the] community” has been nominated for the Inspiration Award, sponsored by McDonald’s.

Leon Medford, coach of RG4FC Warriors Under 11s has created an environment where “every individual feels valued, heard, and supported,” the nominator said.

“At the heart of Leon’s impact is his ability to see potential where others see barriers,” said the nominator. “He has built a safe space for young people where it is okay not to succeed every time.”

Rather than focusing solely on results, Leon encourages players to enjoy the game, learn from setbacks and support one another.

“He makes sure all the children know winning is not everything and that the priority is always enjoyment,” the nominator added.

Whether organising training sessions, managing matchdays or helping other teams across the club, Leon “consistently puts the needs of the club and community above his own, working tirelessly behind the scenes without ever seeking the spotlight.”

Through Leon’s guidance and encouragement, young players develop confidence, discipline, self-belief and important life skills that will benefit them long after they leave the pitch.

“Leon’s leadership goes far beyond tactics and trophies,” said the nominator. “His energy and approach have helped young players build resilience and confidence.”

“He doesn’t just teach football; he teaches life skills, community spirit and the importance of lifting others up.”
