Julia Titus

A singer-songwriter whose performances have brought people together across Reading for decades has been nominated for the Music Legacy Award, sponsored by Vale & West.

Julia Titus

Julia Titus, known to many as ‘Ma Bessie’, has been recognised for using blues and jazz to unite communities and celebrate the spirit of togetherness.

“Ma Bessie is the epitome of how music can facilitate social cohesion in Reading,” said the nominator. “Her songs bring diverse communities together, young and old.”

Inspired by ‘Empress of the Blues’ singer, Bessie Smith, Julia performs both classic blues and original music, regularly appearing at community and charity events across Reading with her band.

Beyond performing, Julia has volunteered at Windrush events and storytelling projects, using music to celebrate heritage, encourage connection and share stories that matter.

“At most charitable events, you’ll find Ma Bessie singing heartfelt music that brings warmth, kindness, healing and love to people,” the nominator added.

Alongside her musical career, Julia raised her son as a single parent and spent five years caring for her mother, while continuing to support community causes through her performances.

“Her spirit of passing love and kindness through music is immeasurable,” said the nominator. “She is a Pride of Reading with roots of one love.”
