The founder of a beloved food festival raising tens of thousands of pounds for men’s cancer charity has been nominated for Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by AB Walker.

Ian Wisdom established the annual Twyford Beer Festival, an entirely volunteer-run event, in 2010, in support of Orchid, the men's cancer charity.

What began as a one-off idea has grown into a hugely successful annual fundraiser, raising more than £84,000 over 16 years, and many more thousands through smaller events Ian also puts on across Reading.

“Ian has not only raised an incredible amount of money but also inspired many other Reading residents to get involved in fundraising,” said the nominator.

“In his recognisable gold suit, he has even (occasionally!) performed on stage at the festival, alongside many local bands who also volunteer their time,” they added.

The festival also celebrates the local community, with many of the beers at the festival sourced locally, supporting Reading's breweries in this challenging economic climate.

As an ambassador for Orchid, Ian’s enthusiasm has helped build a loyal team of more than 50 volunteers who return year after year to give their time in support of the charity.

Despite being invited to Buckingham Palace in recognition of his fundraising achievements, Ian remains a familiar face in Reading, often planning his next charitable venture over a pint at The Alehouse on Broad Street.
