A midwife who introduced a “first of its kind” groundbreaking technology to support anxious pregnant people has been nominated for the Health Worker of the Year award, sponsored by Clearview Intelligence.

Heidi Ottenson

Heidi Ottenson, a Consultant Midwife at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, developed an innovative way of using virtual reality headsets to create a calming and immersive experience, helping pregnant people relax while having blood tests or other procedures.

“Heidi has introduced this innovative service, which is the first of its kind to be introduced in maternity services,” said the nominator.

The nominator highlighted how the technology can make a significant difference for women who might otherwise avoid or struggle with important maternity appointments because of anxiety about hospitals, needles or medical procedures.

As well as introducing new technology, Heidi has been praised for her commitment to “always trying to improve experience and outcomes for pregnant women.”

“We are extremely fortunate to have her working at Royal Berkshire Hospital.”
