The host of an open mic night that has helped countless musicians take their first steps onto the local music scene has been nominated for the Grassroots Music Award, sponsored by Pride of Reading CIC.

Nicole Allen hosts the Open Mic night at The Butler on Chatham Street every Friday. “Nicole has become one of Reading’s true champions of grassroots music,” said her nominator.

“Week after week… she gives up her own time to organise, host and encourage performers, making every artist, from someone playing their very first song in public to experienced local musicians, feel valued and supported.”

Many musicians have performed publicly for the first time at The Butler before going on to play festivals, venues and community events across the region.

A talented musician in her own right, country singer-songwriter Nicole continues to support other artists while building her own successful music career, including achieving Number 1 on the iTunes with her debut EP Goodbye Girl.

“Rather than focusing solely on her own achievements, Nicole consistently invests her time, energy and talent back into Reading’s music scene,” the nominator added.

Her open mic has become a regular fixture in Reading’s cultural calendar, creating friendships, collaborations and opportunities for emerging talent.

“Grassroots music depends on passionate people who quietly work behind the scenes to keep local music alive,” the nominator said. “Nicole Allen exemplifies that spirit.”
