Derry Pope

A “dedicated music man” inspiring performers across Reading despite facing health challenges has been nominated for the Grassroots Music Award, sponsored by Pride of Reading Awards CIC.

Derry Pope has been recognised for his tireless work as a grassroots music promoter, choir leader and teacher, supporting people of all ages to develop their confidence and musical ability.

Derry leads choirs for Age UK as well as other community groups and is also committed to teaching younger people.

The nominator praised his patience, encouragement and determination to help every member succeed, “never hesitating to assist if you are unsure of how the music works, putting you right no matter how long it takes!” they said.

Many of the concerts Derry organises are held in support of charitable causes, with a recent event raising more than £1,000 for Action for Children.

He was also praised for encouraging choir members and students to explore solo performances, supporting them all the way through to achieving a high standard.

Recently, he organised a concert for a dementia charity group and included a burlesque performance, recognising that living with dementia does not stop people having adult identities, interests and emotions.

“I could go on with the endless talents this man shares with students that come into his classes to enhance their way forward…all in all a fine example of a dedicated music man.”
