The woman who led the revival of one of Reading’s most cherished traditions has been nominated for the Putting Reading on the Map Award, sponsored by the Purple Turtle and Jacobs the Jewellers.

Bethany Brown, Membership Services Manager at Reading Students’ Union, worked “creatively and tirelessly” with university colleagues, students, community organisations and performers to bring back the historic RAG Parade for the University’s centenary celebrations.

For more than 50 years, the RAG Day parade was a highlight of Reading’s calendar, raising money for charities and bringing students and residents together. It had not followed its traditional route through the town centre since 1984.

On 17 May, the revived parade travelled from Broad Street Mall to Forbury Gardens, featuring music, costumes, performances and giant puppets. Around 3,000 people attended, with university clubs, societies and local community groups taking part.

“The reaction from spectators was one of genuine joy, surprise and excitement,” said the nominator.

Bethany was praised for her creativity, enthusiasm and resilience in delivering an event that far exceeded expectations while reconnecting Reading with an important part of its heritage.

The parade formed part of a wider centenary weekend that attracted more than 10,000 people and generated positive coverage celebrating the relationship between the University, its students and the wider town.

Bethany has also been nominated for The Inspiration Award sponsored by McDonald’s, and The Chris Tarrant Award, sponsored by The Oracle.
