Claudette Maharaj
A community leader whose work is championing inclusion, Black heritage and social change has been nominated for the Putting Reading on the Map Award, sponsored by Purple Turtle and Jacobs the Jewellers.
Claudette Maharaj, founder and CEO of TRIYBE, has been recognised for her innovative work “strengthening identity, amplifying underrepresented voices and driving social change.”
“Claudette is an inspiring and innovative change-maker,” said the nominator. “Her work bridges communities and drives meaningful social change.”
Drawing on experience across mental health, education, public health and social care, Claudette has developed culturally responsive approaches to community wellbeing.
Under her leadership, TRIYBE is leading what is believed to be the UK’s first black hair care research project, supported by the University of Reading and British Science Association. The research explores the potential impact of chemicals in black hair care products on physical and mental health.
Claudette also serves as a global advisor for Academy Achievers, supporting its mission to encourage more black heritage girls and women into STEM careers.
Locally, TRIYBE continues to lead projects celebrating Reading’s diverse communities, including a mural highlighting the contributions of residents in East Reading.
“Claudette often shares, ‘To make real change, you must step outside the system that resists it.’ That belief has shaped a career defined by creativity, and commitment to transformation.
