The Engine Shed
A “remarkable Caversham-based charity”, The Engine Shed provides a safe, inclusive sanctuary for children and young people with autism who share a passion for trains.
Their nominator for Charity of the Year, sponsored by Reading Today, said: ”Operating free monthly sessions, The Engine Shed offers an engaging environment where children can immerse themselves in model railways, train-themed activities and shared play with like-minded peers.
“These sessions are not only joyful but also a vital tool for social development, helping children build confidence, communication skills, and friendships in a setting tailored to their needs.”
The nominator added: “The passion and care behind each session are evident – not just in the excitement of the children but also in the sense of relief and community it provides to parents and carers. The charity fosters a rare space where families feel welcomed, supported, and understood.”
They added: “Beyond the tracks and trains, The Engine Shed creates meaningful impact – combating isolation, building social bridges and nurturing individual growth in children who may struggle in more conventional environments. The joy, connection and confidence gained in these sessions are truly transformative.
The nominator commended The Engine Shed “for its inspiring work and continued commitment to supporting neurodiverse young people.”
