Mandy Kesel

For over four decades, Mandy Kesel has been an inspirational force at St Joseph’s College. As Director of the Arts and Head of Music, she has devoted 43 years to transforming lives through music, said her nominator for The Inspiration Award sponsored by McDonald’s.

“Her unwavering passion, energy and belief in the power of music have touched thousands of pupils, staff and families, creating a legacy that resonates across generations,” they said.

“Mrs Kesel has built an inclusive and vibrant musical community – leading orchestras, choirs, ensembles, jazz and brass groups, directing major concerts and European choir tours, and forming a lasting partnership with the London Mozart Players.

“Under her visionary leadership, the college has become a recognised Centre of Excellence.” She played a pivotal role in the creation of a state-of-the-art Music Centre, giving pupils access to world-class facilities and experiences.

“More than just a teacher, she is a mentor and motivator – offering tireless support to pupils of all abilities, during evenings, weekends and holidays. Whether preparing students for concerts or conservatoire auditions, she gives her all. Every Year 7 pupil is welcomed into choir, often sparking a lifelong love of music.”

Her nominator for Employee of the Year, sponsored by Reading Buses, described her as “the beating heart of the college.”

Her nominator said she ”has been the beating heart of St Joseph’s College”, transforming its music department into a nationally recognised centre.

“She goes above and beyond every single day, championing the transformative power of music and nurturing generations of young musicians”.

Her leadership has created an inclusive, vibrant musical community. She regularly brings in professional musicians for workshops and masterclasses. Every Year 7 pupil is welcomed into choir, sparking musical journeys that often last a lifetime, said her nominator.

“Her commitment is tireless - offering support during evenings and weekends, preparing students for everything from school concerts to conservatoire auditions.

“Mrs Kesel’s dedication, good humour and passion resonate far beyond the classroom. She inspires pupils, staff and families alike, fostering confidence, excellence and joy through music. “A colleague said it best: ‘It is a privilege to work with Mrs Kesel – she is quite simply amazing’.”
