Sanctuary Strikers
Sanctuary Strikers is more than just a football team – it is a lifeline for individuals who have fled hardship and are seeking safety, belonging, and a new start, said their nominator for Volunteer/s of the Year.
Through weekly football sessions, the group provides a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for refugees and asylum seekers. Participants can rebuild confidence, improve mental and physical well-being and make lasting friendships, they said.
The team helps individuals overcome the isolation and uncertainty often experienced by those navigating the asylum process. By encouraging teamwork, structure and community involvement, Sanctuary Strikers plays a crucial role in helping people integrate into life in the UK. Sessions are open to all abilities and backgrounds, and volunteers offer language support, mentoring, and signposting to local services.
“What makes Sanctuary Strikers truly special is its strong community spirit. Led by dedicated volunteers, the team has become a beacon of hope and positivity,” said the nominator.
Players not only improve their fitness and mental health but also grow in confidence and purpose, and they encourage the team to take part in community activities by holding the community cup tournament in Reading once a year.
Many participants have gone on to join local clubs, showing the ripple effect of this inspiring initiative.
“Sanctuary Strikers exemplifies the power of sport to change lives and foster inclusion, and they are truly deserving of recognition for their tireless volunteer-led efforts in Reading.”
