Veera Gupta
A “driving force in uniting people from different backgrounds, breaking down cultural barriers and fostering intercultural collaboration”.
Veera Gupta has been put forward for the Cultural Contribution award.
Her nominator met Veera through a project to establish dementia support workshops at the Indian Community Centre.
“It was through this work that I discovered the full extent of her longstanding and tireless dedication to the Reading community,” they said.
“From the moment I met her, it was clear that she possesses a rare and inspiring presence.
“Her warmth, kindness, and open-minded nature naturally draws people in, creating a welcoming environment wherever she goes. Veera radiates positivity and enthusiasm, which is immediately felt by those around her,” they added.
Veera has devoted over 40 years of service to the Indian Community Centre in Reading, they said.
“Her contributions go far beyond her role. Her efforts have shaped the centre into an inclusive and vibrant hub of learning, social connection and shared growth.”
Her impact spans generations. “From young children to the elderly, Veera has created and led groups that meet diverse community needs.
“She has introduced and managed a wide range of initiatives, from cultural classes, fashion sessions, football and drumming for children, to zumba, pilates and yoga for adults and older residents. These sessions not only promote physical activity but also nurture social bonds through shared meals and conversations.”
Veera’s most recent initiatives, the introduction of monthly dementia support sessions and work with University of Reading researchers, has been particularly transformative, they said.
She has worked in partnership with local organisations such as Young People With Dementia and the university to challenge stigma around dementia, especially within the South Asian community.
“Her efforts are fostering a deeper understanding of dementia and building support networks for those affected.
“Veera's legacy is already evident. Many children who once took part in her programmes have grown up to pursue careers inspired by the skills they developed under her guidance. Her work is intergenerational, impactful and deeply rooted in the spirit of community,” they said.
“Veera exemplifies what it means to make a cultural contribution. Her passion, commitment, and ability to bring people together make her a truly deserving nominee for this award. Reading is a richer, more connected place because of her work.”
The award is sponsored by M&G Real Estate.
