Reading Family Aid
For more than 70 years, Reading Family Aid has been a beacon of hope for families facing financial hardship, said their nominator for Charity of the Year, sponsored by Reading Today.
Through their core initiatives – particularly the annual Toy & Teens Project – the charity brings joy and essential support to families who are struggling to make ends meet, they said adding their ‘secret grotto’ at Christmas, helps “to bring magic and relief to so many during the festive season.
“At the heart of this work is the remarkable dedication of volunteers like Chair Wendy Howell.” Under her leadership, the Toy Project has grown year after year, distributing thousands of donated gifts to children who might otherwise receive nothing over Christmas, said the nominator.
“For many families, this support makes a deeply emotional and tangible difference.”
The charity works year-round to provide relief through day outings, fundraising, and collaboration with local organisations.
“With a small team and limited resources, Reading Family Aid continues to deliver an outsized impact through sheer compassion, organisation, and a deep understanding of the challenges local families face.
“By creating magical memories for children and ensuring families in need feel seen and supported, Reading Family Aid embodies the spirit of community.”
