Dexter Godwin

Eight year old Dexter Godwin has shown extraordinary strength, courage, and determination far beyond his years in fighting an aggressive brain tumour.

His nominator for the Child of Courage award sponsored by De Vere Wokefield Estate said they were proud to put him forward “in recognition of his incredible journey, the challenges he has overcome, and the light he continues to bring to those around him.

“Dexter faced something no child should ever have to — a diagnosis of medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour,” they added.

What followed was an incredibly tough journey, they said, including major brain surgery to remove the tumour, an operation to insert a Hickman line (a tube into a large vein near the heart) and months of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

“Despite everything, Dexter has shown extraordinary strength, courage, and determination far beyond his years.

“He faced each challenge with a smile, never letting fear or discomfort dampen his spirit. His resilience has been truly inspiring — to his family, his friends, and everyone who knows him.”

The nominator continued: “Even now, Dexter continues to attend ongoing appointments for his eyes, ears, and physiotherapy, but he never lets these hurdles hold him back.”

Dexter has now returned to school fulltime and even started playing football again, “a remarkable achievement that reflects his drive to return to the things he loves.

“Throughout it all, Dexter has been cheerful through the pain, kind, and full of life. His journey is of strength, hope, and never giving up — and it reminds me of how brave and brilliant children can be,” they said.
