Camp Mohawk
A critical support to the SEN community, Camp Mohawk helps over 700 local families who have a child with additional needs or a disability to access a safe adapted environment to play, learn and socialise when their worlds can be very isolating.
His nominator for the Charity of the Year award, sponsored by Reading Today, said the group has no government funding.
With grants incredibly difficult to secure, the charity relies heavily on the support of local businesses and fundraising at community events to reach its annual running costs to ensure its vital support, with family days, short breaks and offering a setting for SEN schools to visit throughout the year.
The centre is set in five acres of peaceful woodland with indoor and outdoor play facilities which are adapted to suit the needs of all children so siblings can play alongside each other.
“As a family member myself for 15 years through my disabled son, I can confirm the critical role Camp Mohawk has had ensuring we could leave the house as a family.”
They said it was the only activity they can access together where siblings are made to feel valued and parents feel part of a community where they are all supported and accepted. “Without it I don’t know if I could have managed to care for my son at home into adult life. It is that critical.”
