Whitley Carnival

Whitley Carnival has sparked a cultural renaissance in Reading, said its nominator for the Cultural Contribution award sponsored by M&G Real Estate.

“What began as an idea from a local primary school pupil blossomed into a joyful, inclusive celebration that has brought together artists, schools and residents like never before,” they added.

The inaugural 2023 event united 11 schools, over 30 arts organisations/community groups and more than 5,000 Reading residents “for a day that transformed perceptions of Whitley.”

It was the first time 11 local arts organisations collaborated on a single cultural project in the town, creating an atmosphere of shared creativity and pride.

In 2025, the carnival returned even stronger. Workshops for 700-plus children and families led to performances including samba drumming and jellyfish-themed dancing.

Costumes ranged from shimmering fish and turtles to pollinator heroes and red kites carrying kites, culminating in a jubilant parade led by the Mayor and local MP, dancing alongside a giant disco turtle down Northumberland Avenue.

“Whitley Carnival has changed the cultural narrative of Reading, giving voice to underrepresented communities and showcasing the transformative power of arts at a grassroots level.

“It fosters long-term collaboration between arts organisations and schools, developing opportunities for disadvantaged children.”

Feedback from the 2025 event includes:

“It was magical for the parents to see their child come to life in such a brilliant way!”

“The children loved the workshops”

“A beautiful partnership was formed – so thank you Whitley Carnival!”

“We were absolutely thrilled with the outcome”

“Brilliant from everyone!”

Whitley Carnival is more than just an event. It’s a catalyst for change, said the nominator.

The carnival has also been put forward for Putting Reading on the Map, sponsored by The Purple Turtle and Jacobs the Jewellers.
