Dr Omar Nafousi
Through his long-standing work at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Dr Omar Nafousi showed his “exceptional dedication, leadership, and service to the people of Reading”, said his nominator for The Chris Tarrant Award sponsored by The Oracle.
Until October 2024, Dr Nafousi served as clinical lead for emergency medicine, having worked in the A&E department for 13 years – six in the lead role, a post usually held for half that time. “Throughout this period, he guided the department through extraordinary challenges, including the immense pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, always upholding a commitment to never turn anyone away,” said his nominator.
“Dr Nafousi has been a constant presence during some of the most critical and difficult times for the NHS.
“His leadership ensured that the Royal Berkshire Hospital continued to provide exceptional emergency care, while also safeguarding the well-being of his team.
“Known for his compassionate and inclusive approach, he is admired for treating each patient with dignity and care, and for supporting colleagues both professionally and personally.”
His nominator said Dr Nafousi stepped down from the leadership position in 2024 to focus more on family, but remains a central figure in the emergency department. “His unwavering dedication, humility, and passion for helping others have left a profound impact on the Reading community.”
