Chris Duret

An “absolute hero to new mums in Reading”, Chris Duret, a “breastfeeding champion, doula and pregnancy/postpartum yoga instructor”, has been nominated for the Local Hero Award sponsored by Green Park.

“Not only does she provide NCT courses, baby massage courses, yoga classes, run the bumps and babies weekly meet-up and a sling library, she absolutely goes above and beyond to build community,” said one nominator.

“Continuously supporting new mums with breastfeeding and running the Sport in Mind mum and baby classes. I would not have been able to breastfeed my two little ones without her, “ said another.

She helps new mums “feel seen and heard.

“Most importantly however Chris is always willing to share her knowledge at any time on any baby subject. She knows all things breastfeeding, body and mood, she will give tips, advice as well as link to sources and research.

“She is so friendly and inclusive. If someone has an issue she hasn't come across she will go and research it. She is the most incredible support in a time of massive change, sleep deprivation, isolation and pressure for so many and she does so with grace and willingness.

“I'm so glad I was in Reading and connected to Chris for the birth of my second child. I would not have the happy and healthy family I do now without her,” said a nominator.

“The information and support she provided was invaluable. It empowered us to advocate for myself and our son throughout pregnancy and birth. Without her, our birth experience would have been unbearable and scary.

“I think it is fair to say that mums (and dads) in Reading would be significantly worse off without Chris. She has helped us in so many ways and we are forever grateful.”

Another nominator said: “Without Chris, I would not have breastfed my baby or met so many new friends. She’s one in a million.”

She has created a WhatsApp group for mums in the community which has served as a space for new mums to connect, share experiences and find support and is always available to answer questions even after hours and at the weekend.

“In amongst the lack of support for new mums, and cuts to health visiting services and breastfeeding support, Chris is a support system for so many women,” said one mum. “It can be lonely being a new mum but Chris makes you feel part of something.”

“I am so grateful that Reading has a community and super members like this in it. Chris; you’re incredible; thank you.”
