Whitley Excellence Cluster

A collaborative network of 11 South Reading schools which supports around 4,000 children and young people has been nominated for the Community of the Year Award, sponsored by Hilton Reading.

Whitley Excellence Cluster

Established over 25 years ago, The Whitley Excellence Cluster brings together primary and secondary schools across South Reading, working in partnership to improve opportunities, support families and ensure no child is left behind.

“What makes the cluster so exceptional is not only the scale of its reach, but the depth of its collaboration,” said the nominator. “By working together, these schools share best practice, support one another through challenges and ensure that no child or family is left behind.”

Through its partnership with Aspire2, the cluster provides enrichment opportunities that many young people might not otherwise experience. These include residential and day trips, university outreach programmes, arts and cultural activities, and community events designed to broaden horizons and build confidence.

Despite operating in an area facing significant and growing challenges, the cluster continues to innovate to meet the evolving needs of children and families.

Its commitment to making education engaging and inclusive is reflected in creative programmes and after-school activities that promote identity, belonging and attendance. More than 500 young people have taken part, with many developing a stronger connection to school as a result.

The cluster also tackles important social issues, including delivering the CODE programme to more than 1,000 students, helping raise awareness of county lines exploitation and how to seek support.

“At the heart of the cluster are dedicated school leaders and staff who bring passion, resilience and an unwavering belief in their young people every day,” the nominator added.

“Their collective effort is transforming lives, strengthening community bonds and creating opportunities where they are needed most.”
