Ten years of bringing Reading’s history to life through themed walking tours has earned a local historian a nomination for the Putting Reading on the Map award, sponsored by the Purple Turtle and Jacobs the Jewellers.

Terry Dixon of Terry’s Reading Walkabouts has been recognised for creating a wide range of walking tours that celebrate the town’s rich local history while also raising money for charity.

“Terry has a great interest in history, particularly local history, and has used that passion to raise Reading’s profile,” said the nominator.

Since launching the walks a decade ago, Terry has raised more than £25,000 for 20 mostly local charities. His walks have attracted not only local residents but also visitors from across the UK and overseas.

The nominator highlighted the variety of routes and themes he has developed, including Medieval Reading, Huntley & Palmers’ 200th anniversary, Edible Reading, and walks exploring Tilehurst, Caversham, Coley and the University area.

“Approachable, informative and full of anecdotes that really engage his audience”, Terry has “has developed a great wealth of knowledge during the 10 years he has been providing this non-profit service to offer the walks to a wide range of visitors”, the nominator said.

Accessibility information is provided for each walk, helping ensure that people with additional needs can take part wherever possible.

“Terry has introduced these walks to encourage local, national and international visitors to appreciate Reading and its history,” the nominator said. “He has definitely helped put Reading on the map.”
