The Rising Sun Arts Centre
More than 35 years of championing up and coming local artists has earned an independent arts venue a nomination for the Grassroots Music Award, sponsored by Pride of Reading CIC.
The Rising Sun Arts Centre, on Silver Street, Reading was founded by an artist collective in 1991 and has “been at the heart of Reading’s cultural and music scene ever since,” their nominator said.
For over three decades, it has built a reputation for supporting emerging talent while presenting a diverse programme that ranges from “avant-garde music to some of the Reading’s best local bands,” they added.
The venue’s impact can be seen in the success of artists who graced their stage early in their careers, including The Amazons, winners of the 2025 Pride of Reading Putting Reading on the Map award.
Its weekly Artist Link-Up sessions provide live performances and networking opportunities for rappers, singers, producers, DJs, dancers and musicians, creating a welcoming space where local performers can collaborate, develop their skills and grow their audiences.
The nominator also highlighted their annual community Here Comes The Sun festival, which offers a valuable platform for local music, arts and creative talent.
Around 50 dedicated volunteers cover everything from running the bar to organising events, stage management and welcoming audiences.
“The Rising Sun Arts Centre should be recognised for its exceptional contribution to supporting and celebrating grassroots music in our town.”
