The “steady heart” of a hospital ward providing care for acute medical and cardiology patients has been nominated for Health Worker of the Year, sponsored by Clearview Intelligence.

Deborah ‘Debs’ Martin, a Ward Clerk on Whitley Ward at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, has been praised for “the kindness and compassion she brings to the ward, [going] well beyond what could ever be expected.”

Known for her “innate” ability to notice and respond to anyone needing support, Debs provides reassurance not only to staff but also to patients and their relatives. Her

For patients requiring one-to-one therapeutic observations, Debs has spent hours sitting with them, talking, doing arts and crafts, and providing companionship that brings comfort and calm during frightening or isolating moments.

The nomination also highlighted her support for a patient with complex needs and a prolonged hospital stay. With the agreement of the family and clinical team, Debs took him for daily coffees, offering normality, conversation and genuine human connection.

“She made sure this gentleman felt seen as a person,” the nominator said. “Her consistent kindness made an immeasurable difference during a very difficult time.”
