Simon Wood

A volunteer whose dedication has helped people overcome barriers to employment has been nominated for Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by AB Walker.

Simon Wood

Simon Wood volunteers with Graft Thames Valley’s weekly Job Club, where he provides one-to-one support for people who have experienced long-term unemployment, disability, poor mental health and other significant challenges.

“Simon’s calm, encouraging approach helps people overcome both practical and emotional barriers,” said the nominator. “Many participants say his belief in them has helped them believe in themselves again.”

The nominator praised the practical guidance Simon offers, helping people improve their CVs, search for suitable jobs, complete their applications and build their confidence to move into employment.

Away from the Job Club, Simon is equally invaluable. A talented IT specialist, he “willingly gives his time to solve technical problems, support staff and management, and keep systems running smoothly, often saving the charity both time and money.”

Despite the wide-ranging contribution he makes, Simon was praised for never seeking recognition.

“His kindness, reliability, expertise and unwavering commitment embody everything that volunteering should be,” the nominator said.

“He is a trusted colleague, an inspiring mentor and a vital part of Graft's mission to transform lives through employment.”
