A beloved library manager who has spent years helping children, families and vulnerable residents across West Reading has been nominated for the Chris Tarrant Award, sponsored by The Oracle.

Terry Curran, manager of Battle Library on Oxford Road, has been recognised for the extraordinary impact he has had through years of what his nominator calls “slow librarianship” in one of Reading’s most diverse communities, where around 80 languages are spoken.

“If the under-5s of West Reading could vote, they would choose Terry,” said the nominator. “He is an unassuming local hero whose work has transformed lives.”

The nominator highlighted how Terry goes far beyond the traditional role of a librarian. He regularly helps parents, immigrants and people experiencing isolation with urgent administrative tasks such as Universal Credit applications, job searches, child custody paperwork and signposting to social services.

Terry was also praised for being a rare and positive male role model for pre-school children. His twice-weekly Rhyme Time sessions attract more than 50 children, and he is known for his patience and kindness with even the youngest attendees.

After each session, families are welcomed into a vibrant children’s library that Terry has carefully developed, featuring colourful displays, craft activities, treasure hunts and quizzes designed to encourage a love of reading and learning.

“Terry has built a trusted, safe haven,” the nominator added. “He fosters lifelong freedom through literacy for both children and adults.”
