A church verger who showed “remarkable bravery” helping to protect worshippers during a frightening incident has been nominated for the Local Hero Award, sponsored by Green Park.

Richard Ashfield, Verger at Reading Minster Church of St Mary the Virgin, has been recognised not only for his bravery during a recent act of criminal damage inside the church, but also for the many years of dedication he has shown to the people of Reading.

During a church service, an individual began causing damage inside the Minster. In what was described as a frightening and unpredictable situation, Richard “showed remarkable bravery and presence of mind”, intervening to stop the attacker and help protect the congregation and everyone present.

“Richard did not hesitate to step forward when it mattered most,” his nominator said. “His actions showed remarkable bravery and a deep sense of responsibility for the people and place in his care.”

More widely, as a familiar and friendly face at Reading Minster, he helps care for one of the town’s most historic and welcoming buildings, ensuring it remains a place where people can feel safe, supported and included.

“The Minster is much more than a place of worship; it is a welcoming and supportive space at the heart of Reading, and Richard is an important part of what makes it feel that way,” the nominator said.
