“Decades of dedication” to empowering and inspiring people through music have earned Paul Jnr Watson a nomination for the Inspiration Award, sponsored by McDonald’s.

As Musical Director at CultureMix Arts, and leader of the Reading All Steel Percussion Orchestra (RASPO), Paul “channels his artistry into uplifting others…teaching children, young people, and adults, erasing age barriers to build a unified musical community,” the nominator said.

A composer, musical director, multi-instrumentalist, steel pan arranger, tuner, teacher and singer-songwriter, one of his most notable achievements has been highlighted: co-writing a breathtaking 10-minute arrangement for RASPO’s collaboration with Brazilian Afoxé group Ylê d’Egbá, which secured a historic fourth place at the prestigious BAS National Panorama Steelband Championships during Notting Hill Carnival in 2018.

His “legendary patience and kind approach” have had a profound impact on many students. One steel pan student said: “I am mesmerised by Paul’s incredible mastery as a musician. He is truly amazing and has helped me improve my confidence.”

“Paul is a remarkable role model whose vision brings pride, rhythm and joy to our town, making him thoroughly deserving of this recognition,” the nominator said.
