Men‘s Shed

A community workshop helping tackle male loneliness, improve wellbeing, and build lasting friendships has been nominated for Charity of the Year, sponsored by Cream Design.

Open to men of all ages regardless of age, experience or background, Reading Men’s Shed on Hilcot Road is described as a “gem of a charity,” providing a welcoming space where they can come together to share practical skills, companionship and support.

Although many members are retired and may be missing the routine and social contact of working life, the charity also attracts younger men who value the supportive community it has created.

The nominator highlighted how the shed offers a place where men can talk openly about health, bereavement and life’s challenges, helping reduce isolation and improve mental and physical wellbeing.

One member, Richard, joined after losing his wife and being encouraged by his GP to visit the shed.

“He thought he already had his own shed and tools, so why would he need to go?” the nominator explained. “But he soon discovered the companionship and social side of Men’s Shed and now says he has ‘loads of friends’.”

At the workshop, members make and repair items together, work on personal projects and use their skills to benefit the Reading community.

“Men’s Shed is like a larger version of the traditional garden shed,” the nominator added, “a place where people feel at home, pursue practical interests and support one another through friendship and shared purpose.”
