The conductor credited with bringing Reading Youth Orchestra back from the brink has been nominated for the Music Legacy Award, sponsored by Vale & West.

When Mel Le Breuilly took over as conductor and chair Reading Youth Orchestra in 2019, membership had fallen so low that it was close to becoming unviable. However, under her steady leadership, it has grown to more than 60 players and is once again a thriving and ambitious ensemble.

“Mel believes an orchestra is not only about musical excellence, but about creating a safe, joyful space where young people can express themselves and grow,” said the nominator.

Her “infectious enthusiasm, musical intelligence and deeply caring approach” is praised as helping to build confidence, creativity and a strong sense of community among young musicians. She encourages students to compose and arrange their own music, provides opportunities for solo and chamber performances, and supports those interested in music technology by involving them in recording, editing and mastering concert audio and video.

Mel’s influence extends across Reading’s wider musical community through her role as Assistant Music Director of the Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra and her involvement with several other local ensembles.

A major highlight saw her worlds collide when the Reading Youth Orchestra joined Aldworth Philharmonic for the world-premiere performance, which gained national recognition when it was broadcast on BBC Radio 3, showcasing Reading’s musical talent to audiences across the country.

“Mel’s achievements, inspiration and lasting impact make her an outstanding candidate for the Music Legacy Award,” the nominator added.
