Martin Bingham
The founder of a grassroots football team has been nominated for the Neighbourhood Champion Award, sponsored by Reading Football Club, in recognition of dedication to creating a safe and supportive space for men in the local community.
Martin Bingham founded RG4FC Underdogs as part of RG4FC 18 months ago. What began with just 8 lads having a kickabout has frown into a space where men struggling with isolation, battling health-related mental health issues, difficult family situations have found a friendly face and a reliable support system.
“Martin typically deflects credit to the wider coaching team. However, this award belongs completely to him, the Underdogs was entirely his vision and project,” said the nominator.
“He has sacrificed family nights out, his own birthday evening, and even gave up time on Christmas Day to check on a player facing a difficult situation at home.
“He is always available to talk, no matter the hour. Martin’s dedication has transformed lives and created a safe space for us.
“We are not strangers anymore we are a family, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award than Martin.”
