Three decades of dedication to helping people with Multiple Sclerosis have been recognised with a nomination for Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by AB Walker.

Now in his 70s, Malcom Cook first came to Berkshire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre over 30 years ago to support his wife after she was first diagnosed with the condition, which at the time had no effective treatment.

After seeing the life-changing benefits of Hyperbaric oxygen therapy firsthand, he trained as a volunteer oxygen operator to help others access the same support.

“Three decades later, Malcolm continues to give his time with the same dedication and compassion,” said the nominator.

To ensure people who work full time can still receive treatment, Malcolm has spent years running evening and weekend oxygen therapy sessions, even volunteering on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve so local people with MS don’t miss out on their treatment.

Malcom’s “calm and reassuring manner” helps put first-time users at ease, and he mentors every new volunteer operator, supporting them throughout a three-month training programme, regularly stepping in at short notice to cover absences and holidays.

Beyond the oxygen chamber, Malcolm also helps raise thousands of pounds for the charity through collections and is always willing to lend a hand with practical jobs around the Centre.

Following the death of his wife in 2020, Malcolm could have stepped away from volunteering. Instead, he chose to continue supporting others with the same selfless commitment.

“His unwavering dedication has benefited countless people,” the nominator added. “He truly deserves recognition for his exceptional service.”
