Graham Corker
A volunteer boxing coach whose “unrelenting desire” to sharing the health benefits of the sport has been nominated for the Neighbourhood Champion Award, sponsored by Reading Football Club.
Graham Corker along with two friends started small group boxing sessions in 2018, for people who wanted to use boxing to keep fit, improve mental wellbeing and socialise, rather than compete in the sport.
“Most boxing clubs are not very receptive to non-competing boxers,” said the nominator. “Graham wanted to create a space where anyone could benefit from boxing, regardless of experience or ambition.”
Word about the classes soon spread, and now the affectionately named “Ol’ Man Boxing Society’ not supports more than 50 members.
Graham gives up his time free of charge, running sessions across five days a week and charging members only a small amount to cover the cost of hiring the venue.
Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued organising outdoor park-based sessions whenever restrictions allowed, borrowing equipment so members could keep meeting, exercising and supporting one another through a difficult period.
“His unrelenting desire for community boxing now sees members from 16 – 60 attending his still not for profit classes,” the nominator said.
The society has also raised significant sums for charity, including more than £25,000 for Help 4 Homeless Veterans, as well as supporting organisations such as Sport in Mind and CALM.
“Graham is still the person members turn to for coaching, encouragement or simply a chat when they need one,” the nominator added, “he has benefited so many directly and many more indirectly.”
