Freely Fruity
A community movement transforming green spaces and inspiring thousands of people to take environmental action has been nominated for the Climate and Sustainability Impact Award, sponsored by the University of Reading.
Volunteer-run Freely Fruity has been recognised for its innovative approach to nature recovery and sustainable food growing through the planting of public orchards and community allotments all over the town.
“Freely Fruity has transformed how people engage with nature, sustainability and food growing,” said the nominator. “Through volunteer-powered orchards, school programmes and community planting events, they have brought together thousands of residents to take practical, positive environmental action.”
Over the past year, the organisation has worked with schools, community groups, local authorities and the University of Reading to deliver large-scale planting projects, helping people of all ages develop new skills while improving their local environment.
“Their work has resulted in increased tree canopy cover, restored green spaces and greater community participation in environmental activities,” the nominator added.
Rather than simply planting trees, Freely Fruity has been praised for creating lasting change by empowering volunteers and bringing communities together.
“They don’t just plant trees – they build communities, empower volunteers and turn environmental challenges into creative, practical solutions,” said the nominator. “Their impact is lasting, visible and deeply rooted in local people.”
