Derek Parsons
A lifetime of generosity of a blood donor who is estimated to have helped save up to 1,500 lives has been recognised for the Local Hero Award, sponsored by Green Park.
Since making his first blood donation in 1965, Derek Parsons has donated whole blood more than 180 times, helping patients across the country, including premature babies who rely on lifesaving transfusions.
As an O negative donor, Derek’s blood can be given to patients of any blood type in emergencies, making his contributions particularly valuable. He has been told he has donated the equivalent of 18 human bodies’ worth of blood over his lifetime.
Derek has raised more than £50,000 for charity through numerous marathons, supporting a range of good causes and making a lasting difference to people in need.
Even into his 70s, he remained active within the community, working part-time as a gardener at Pembroke Care Home and supporting residents through his work.
“Humble about his achievements, Derek says he would not want to claim any records,” the nominator added.
“…But many people remark they have never seen anyone do what he has done.”
