Assisting Berkshire Children to Read
Assisting Berkshire Children to Read (ABC to Read) is transforming the lives of children across Reading through the power of literacy, said their nominator for Charity of the Year, sponsored by Cream Design.
Working in partnership with 23 local schools, ABC to Read supports at least 100 children twice a week through 60 trained volunteers, providing vital one-to-one reading support.
“For many children, reading can feel impossible,” said the nominator. “One child arrived at sessions hiding behind a book because he was embarrassed, he could not read the words.”
“With patient one-to-one support, encouragement and regular practice, he slowly gained confidence, began reading aloud and started to enjoy stories for the first time. “That journey is repeated across Reading every week.”
ABC to Read ensures support reaches those who need it most, particularly children who have fallen behind or lack confidence. Its volunteers become trusted role models, giving children time, attention and belief in their potential.
Strong literacy skills improve educational outcomes, wellbeing and future opportunities, benefiting the whole community.
“During the National Year of Reading, it would be fitting to recognise ABC to read’s impact in opening the door to brighter futures for local children.”
The charity has also been put forward for Volunteer/s of the Year, and the Chris Tarrant Award.
