Reading Indie Market
Hundreds of small businesses run by Reading creatives have been given a platform to connect with customers, celebrate creativity and thrive thanks to Becky Stevens’ Reading Indie Market, said the nominator for Business in Action sponsored by Boyes Turner.
Becky, founder of the market, “is a true champion of small business and community spirit,” they said.
“After launching her own handmade jewellery business in 2017, Becky quickly recognised the lack of opportunities for local creatives to showcase their work.
“In 2018, she took action, organising Reading’s first Etsy-affiliated Christmas market at BrewDog. The response was overwhelming and, by 2019, the event moved to the larger St Laurence’s church, welcoming over 3,000 visitors.”
Becky’s passion and determination didn’t stop there, said the nominator. She partnered with Double-Barrelled Brewery, running quarterly markets that offer a vibrant, contemporary twist on the traditional craft fair.
When the pandemic struck in 2020, Becky adapted swiftly, hosting three successful virtual markets to keep the local economy alive, said the nominator.
Since then, she’s continued to grow the indie community, partnering with Readipop in 2022 and Blue Collar Corner to bring independent makers into the heart of Reading’s cultural events. “Through her tireless efforts, Becky has given hundreds of small businesses a platform to connect with customers, celebrate creativity and thrive.”
Becky has also been nominated for The Chris Tarrant Award, sponsored by The Oracle, and Putting Reading on the Map, sponsored by The Purple Turtle and Jacobs the Jewellers.
