Christina Gilbertson and Milly

As a dedicated volunteer with Pets As Therapy, Christina Gilbertson brings her “wonderful therapy dog” Milly into Brookfields Specialist SEN School twice a month, creating an atmosphere of calm, comfort, and emotional support.

Christina and Milly’s visits have become an integral and much-anticipated part of school life, said their nominator for Volunteer/s of the Year sponsored by AB Walker.

“Milly’s gentle and intuitive nature allows her to connect with children who face challenges with communication, sensory regulation, and anxiety.

“Her presence brings moments of joy and reassurance to those who may struggle to engage with others. Whether walking quietly with a pupil, waiting patiently for a ball to be thrown, or simply offering a calming presence, Milly provides unique support that only an animal can offer,” they added.

“Christina goes above and beyond in her role – taking time to understand each child’s needs and building trust at their pace. Her empathy, patience, and consistency have had a measurable impact on the children’s emotional and social development.

“Christina and Milly embody community spirit and kindness. They truly represent the very best of what can be achieved through compassion, perseverance, and the extraordinary human-animal bond.

“Christina and her wonderful therapy dog make an exceptional contribution to the well-being of young people with special educational needs in Reading,” said the nominator.
