ABC to read
ABC to read, which aims to transform the lives of primary school children who are struggling to read at primary schools, have been put forward for the the Great Place to Work award, sponsored by The Purple Turtle and Jacobs the Jewellers.
The nominator described the organisation as “a small local charity with a huge heart – not only for the children it supports, but also for the team that makes it all happen.
“After winning the Pride of Reading Awards Charity of the Year in 2023, it’s clear the impact of ABC to read is widely recognised. What is less visible, but equally remarkable, is the positive, supportive culture behind the scenes that enables this impact.”
With only eight members of staff and over 160 trained volunteers, ABC to read creates an inclusive, caring workplace where everyone is encouraged, supported, and valued, they said.
“The team works flexibly, with trust and autonomy, and the leadership fosters a culture where wellbeing comes first.”
One staff member has shown incredible resilience continuing her work while raising three young children after losing her husband – supported every step of the way by the charity, they said.
“The CEO models care and understanding in every aspect of the organisation’s culture. “Volunteers are personally known and appreciated, invited to regular coffee mornings, and celebrated through awards and thank-you events.”
In 2024, the charity created a new annual award in honour of their late Chair, recognising volunteers who go above and beyond – “an example of how ABC to read is always looking to celebrate and uplift the people behind the work.
“Training is of a high standard, but it’s not just about skills – it’s about belonging," said the nominator.
New volunteers often say they “feel part of something important.” Staff describe a working culture where their views matter, communication is open, and successes are shared.
“ABC to read doesn’t just make Berkshire a better place for children – it is a genuinely great place to work, led with compassion, and grounded in its values. It’s a model of what a small organisation can achieve when people feel trusted, empowered and cared for.”
