Berkshire Unplugged

Volunteer broadcasters who have spent nearly 15 years championing local musicians, venues and festivals across Reading and Berkshire has been nominated for the Grassroots Music Award, sponsored by Pride of Reading CIC.

DJ Andrew ‘Charlie’ Charles been at the forefront of Reading’s music scene for almost two decades. His show Berkshire Unplugged on 95.6 B Radio, shines a spotlight on emerging musicians taking their first steps, right through to established Berkshire acts.

“Charlie has dedicated countless hours of his free time to supporting local artists, venues, festivals and promoters,” said the nominator. “His work has helped strengthen and celebrate Reading’s vibrant grassroots music scene.”

Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, Berkshire Unplugged was created to ensure local artists still had a platform when live performance opportunities were severely limited.

The programme is co-hosted by Charlie and Bray Casey, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Tilehurst indie rock and grunge band Bone Idle. Together they combine experienced grassroots broadcasting with the first-hand perspective of an active local musician.

The nominator highlighted Bone Idle’s own journey as an example of the show’s impact, with airplay, artist takeover features, festival coverage and ongoing promotion helping introduce the band to new audiences, including an appearance at Readipop Fiesta.

“What makes Berkshire Unplugged stand out is its engaging, personality-led broadcasting,” the nominator added. “Charlie and Bray’s genuine passion, humour and energy connect local artists with wider audiences while supporting Reading’s venues, festivals and events.”
