A Caversham dog trainer using representing “everything that makes a small, local business special” has been nominated for Business in Action, sponsored by Boyes Turner.

Barkshire Dog Training, run by Sarah Hawkins, was recognised for combining professional, positive dog training with a strong commitment to compassion, inclusion and community involvement.

Based in Caversham and inspired by her two rescue dogs, Manu and Poppy, Sarah focuses on helping owners build stronger, kinder relationships with their dogs through positive, force-free training.

“She welcomes every family who comes to her, whatever that family looks like,” her nominator said. “Support is always tailored around their needs and how their dog fits into their family.”

Beyond her training work, Sarah is an active member of the Caversham Traders Association, working with other local businesses owners to host events. She has also partnered with Oakley Veterinary Clinic, and supports Launchpad Reading’s dog walking fundraiser, which helps prevent people experiencing homelessness from having to give up their pets.

Despite receiving national recognition after winning Dragon Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday Award, the nominator emphasises that Sarah’s greatest achievement is the local impact she has made.

“What matters most is helping dogs and people feel more connected and creating a sense of belonging within our community,” the nominator added.
